Timon of Athens

William Shakespeare

A wealthy Athenian nobleman spends all his money on his friends only to be abandoned when his fortune runs out. He retreats to the woods and becomes a bitter misanthrope, railing against the corruption of humanity. The play is a stark tragedy about the hollowness of social bonds and the corrupting power of money.

Timon, Apemantus, Alcibiades, Flavius

First Performance: 1605, at Blackfriars Theatre, London

A rarely performed and difficult play, often viewed as an unfinished collaboration with Thomas Middleton.
